In the movies, Christmas is usually portrayed as a holiday celebrated at home—with Mom, Dad and kids all happily gathered around the Christmas tree surrounded by an abundance of gifts. I don’t know about you, but that type of idyllic scene isn’t exactly how my holiday played out.

Christmas can also be such a chaotic time of year, so my family and I very much prefer to travel over the holiday instead. Many great properties offer special activities and events for Christmas that will keep the whole family occupied and engaged during your trip. And even better: there’s no clean up involved! What is a better gift than that?

Here are our top 10 picks for a magical holiday celebration:
